How should I explain a project in an interview?
Explain the problem first, then your specific role, the hardest decision, the evidence that shaped your work, the result, and what you would improve next.
Use a five-part story
Keep the opening under two minutes so the interviewer can choose where to go deeper.
- Problem: who needed what and why?
- Role: what did you personally own?
- Decision: what tradeoff did you make?
- Evidence: how did you test or measure it?
- Reflection: what changed in your thinking?
Be precise about teamwork
Use ‘we’ for team outcomes and ‘I’ for your own contribution. Naming a teammate’s work does not diminish yours; it shows that you understand how the result came together.
