Why do AI builders need energy literacy?

AI is physical infrastructure: computing equipment consumes electricity, produces heat, and depends on grids, generation, cooling, and supply chains. Energy literacy helps builders understand real cost and operational constraints.

Compute has a place and a time

Electricity price, carbon intensity, grid capacity, cooling needs, and reliability vary by location and hour. Workloads that can shift in time or place may interact with energy systems differently from always-on services.

Ask measurable questions

Replace broad claims about whether AI is ‘good’ or ‘bad’ for energy with questions about the workload, hardware, utilization, power source, time, and alternative.

  • How much energy does the task use per useful result?
  • When and where does demand occur?
  • Can the workload pause or move?
  • What equipment and cooling are required?
